This is one of the oldest in my portfolio, made back in 2017.

The file was "saved" with the help of more modern software tools that helped address a bit of softness and noise that were the result of the use of older camera equipment. While the unedited file looked fine, the details began falling apart a bit as I started processing the image.

One could point to this photo as proof that you don't need The Best in terms of equipment to make a beautiful photo. If memory serves me correctly as I write this nearly 8 years later in 2025, I started off attempting to photograph the larger tree in the mid-ground on the left.

Indeed, I know I have a tighter photo of the lower right of its canopy with a beautiful fall backdrop. That frame, unfortunately, has some focus issues that simply can't be overcome, which is a shame as I absolutely love the composition.

What you see here was overlooked until late 2024, when I began the processing of reviewing my archives, as I do every so often. I can only assume I dismissed it in the past due to the flat sky, but I've since grown to appreciate a sky like that - with the proper framing - as it doesn't fight against the interest found in the landscape.

From the variations of color to the shapes and textures created by the structures of the trees themselves, I found myself falling in love with this photo.

At the end of the day, regardless of what all the aforementioned details provide, I think what I appreciate most about this photo is it speaks so strongly of what I love about my little haven here in north Texas. I know this particular view well, and over the years I've hiked this short loop trail more often that not as I start out my journeys into the park.
