  • Eagle Mountain Park, Texas (2024) - Returning to the park a month after my outing to honor my mom's birthday, I was somewhat surprised to find an abundance of color, not too dissimilar to what I experienced in the fall of 2022. Although summer had been milder than the prior years, the October drought had brought uncertainty to my hopes for another strong season. Mother Nature surprises once again…

Not far from the park’s entrance there’s a short loop trail to and from an overlook. On one side of the loop in particular, the landscape drops away towards a meadow below, technically offering up broad vista views, something of a rarity in north Texas. Unfortunately, over the years, the trees and scrubby bushes that cover the downward slope have grown (as they tend to do), significantly limiting what can be seen and photographed from the higher vantage point. Thankfully, between some remaining gaps in the foliage and my ridiculously tall tripod, there are still a few spots where I can take advantage of the views.

My original intent for this photo was to home in on the vibrant trees in the foreground but, as I played with different compositions and focal lengths, I realized the photo would be more compelling with the inclusion of the skeletal trees lurking in the shadows.

With the droughts, the park has undergone some changes as many trees have died off (the combination of 2021’s harsh freeze followed by multiple harsh summers hasn’t helped, I’m sure). In some parts of the park, it’s mostly pines that have suffered but elsewhere, such as what’s captured in this photo, the pines are doing well while their deciduous peers have succumbed to the trials of the past few years.
