  • Cimarron Mountains, Colorado (2024) - If memory serves me correctly, I slept poorly through the night, tossing and turning with restlessness. That’s not uncommon when I have to, or want to, be up early for sunrise, which was my goal for what might be my final morning in Colorado. I’m so worried about getting a good night’s sleep before an early wake up that I end up anxious all night, afraid I’ve overslept, and get less sleep than I would otherwise.

Regardless, I mostly met my goal and climbed out of the back of the 4Runner just before dawn. As luck would have it, it seemed my early wakeup call was for naught as the sky was nothing but gray clouds. I made my way down the side road my campsite was off anyways, hoping for a break in the clouds as the sun rose above the horizon.

Amazingly, I got exactly that for one brief moment. I stayed at this location, near where I had made “Salutations” two evenings before, for an hour and half, dodging intermittent drizzle and hoping for more bursts of sunlight on the surrounding landscape.

At one point, with my camera set up on a nearby slope to get a bit of added height to ensure the distant pine trees didn’t break the mountain horizon, I took a reprieve under the rear hatch of the truck, relying on my wireless remote to trigger sporadic shots as the light subtlety shifted with time.

Listening to my favorite band while enjoying a mug of hot tea and my go-to road trip quick/lazy breakfast of powdered donuts, raindrops pattering on the glass overhead, I watched dozens of birds of a multitude of species swoop and dive and soar amongst the bushes and trees. I thought of mom. Of her affection for her feathered friends whose company she enjoyed from her kitchen window so much, knowing she would have loved hearing about this moment.

I stopped the music so I could listen to birdsong. A hummingbird suddenly flew up to me and paused, hovering a mere foot or two from my face, seemingly looking directly into my eyes for a few seconds before darting away.

And, for the first time since mom passed, I truly, fully let go and wept with the heavens.

It was time to head home.
